Conference play is here, and before the SEC dives into the heat of competition, it's worth looking back at how some top teams fared in non-conference play. From perfect starts and statement wins, to a few records that don't tell the full story, here’s how five programs positioned themselves heading into SEC play.
Texas (8-0)
The Longhorns wasted no time proving why they’re a national powerhouse, rolling through non-conference play with a perfect 8-0 record. They posted five sweeps, showing they rarely give up sets, while also collecting seven wins over ranked opponents including Baylor and Stanford. Texas entered SEC play at home with all the expected momentum sweeping Vanderbilt at the SEC opener Wednesday night.
Kentucky (7-2)
Kentucky wrapped up non-conference play with a 7-2 record, highlighted by 3 top 10 wins defeating Louisville, Penn State, and SMU. Along the way the Wildcats showed their ability to compete across conferences, picking up wins against programs from the Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12. They carried that energy into the start of SEC play, opening at home against South Carolina 3-0 Wednesday night.
Mississippi State (10-0)
Mississippi State finished non-conference play with a perfect 10-0 record, only the second time in program history that they’ve won their first ten matches in a season. Out of 34 sets in non-conference play, the Bulldog’s dropped just four, showing impressive consistency. They will face a tough road ahead and a legitimate threat to their perfect record, opening conference play on the road against Florida Friday night.
Florida (5-4)
Florida finished non-conference play with a 5-4 record, facing a challenging schedule that included several top ranked opponents. The Gators secured notable wins over Pittsburgh and Baylor, while suffering losses to Stanford, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. This non-conference competition gave Florida a strong test and valuable experience heading into SEC play. They open SEC play at home Friday night looking to do damage to Mississippi States perfect record.
Missouri (8-3)
Missouri concluded non-conference play with an 8-4 record. While the Tigers secured some significant victories against teams like Wyoming and Rhode Island, they struggled to clinch wins against ranked opponents.
