Big Ten players dominate AVCA’s Player of the Week awards

Big Ten players dominate AVCA’s Player of the Week awards

Purdue Boilermaker’s outside hitter Kenna Wollard was named the AVCA’s national Player of the Week last week.

This comes on the heels of Wollard’s performance of sweeping No. 24 UCLA and No. 17 USC.

The 6-1 junior from Dunlap, Illinois, averaged 6.12 kills per set and 6.69 points per set. In the reverse sweep over the Bruins, she had 33 kills and hit .369, then she added 16 kills and two blocks in the 3-0 victory vs the Trojans.

She is the third player from the conference to receive the honor this year. The first to receive the honor was Nebraska’s middle blocker, Rebekah Allick.

Allick was the first player to receive the award this season after she had 12 blocks and 20 kills in top-ranked Nebraska’s wins over No. 3 Pittsburgh and No. 6 Stanford to start the season. In the four-set win on opening night, she had eight blocks and nine kills, then she followed that up by leading the Huskers in points (14.5) and hitting percentage (.600), which earned her the match MVP award in a dominating sweep of the Cardinal.

The second Big Ten star to receive the honor was Wisconsin’s outside hitter Mimi Colyer. Colyer hit .582 and averaged 5.83 kills per set and 6.25 points per set in wins over then-ranked Georgia Tech and over the University of Milwaukee. Colyer reached double-digits in kills in both matches, including 19 kills at Tech and 16 vs. Milwaukee. She was also named the DI Player of the Week last October when she played at Oregon.

All three players legitimately have a chance to not only win Big Ten Player of the Year but National Player of the Year.
