Create a Player ProfileCompetition Runs Deep at Louisville’s Red vs. Black Scrimmage

The University of Louisville women’s volleyball team lit up L&N Federal Credit Union Arena with its annual Red vs. Black scrimmage, and while the atmosphere felt like a season opener, the real fireworks came from the heated position battles unfolding across the court.
Middle Blocker Matchup: Makun vs. Sherman
Fans better keep an eye on the middle. Freshman Addison Makun and redshirt junior Hannah Sherman are locked in a battle for the M2 spot. Both bring size and blocking ability, and both thrive when attacking in front of the setter. The difference is Sherman’s experience versus Makun’s youthful explosiveness. It is a classic future-versus-veteran clash, and neither is backing down. Early edge: Hannah Sherman.
Right Side Rivalry: Robins vs. Blackshear
If you want drama, look no further than the right side. Junior Reese Robins, a blocking wall who can shut down any outside hitter, is squaring off against freshman Kalyssa Blackshear, who dropped a scrimmage-leading 14 kills and turned heads with her high-flying attack. Robins brings the defensive edge, while Blackshear delivers the offensive firepower. This may be the most electric position battle in the entire gym. Early edge: Kalyssa Blackshear.
Defensive Depth: Urban vs. Kenny
With junior Kam Schrand securing the libero jersey, the spotlight shifts to the defensive specialist role. Junior Molly Urban and true freshman Hannah Kenny are competing for a back-row spot that could hinge on the right-back outcome. Urban offers steady experience, while Kenny, a former setter, brings surprising instincts and confidence in right-back defense. It is brains versus boldness in the backcourt. Early edge: Hannah Kenny, thanks to her right-back experience and ability to set in transition.
The scrimmage made one thing clear: this Cardinal team is deep, competitive, and hungry. Every battle in practice is sharpening the roster for a 2025 season loaded with promise. The only question left is who will win these duels and help carry the Cards into the spotlight this fall.
