Cardinals Flash Depth and Firepower at Red vs. Black Scrimmage

The University of Louisville women’s volleyball team gave fans their first glimpse of the 2025 season inside a packed L&N Federal Credit Union Arena, as the annual Red vs. Black Scrimmage delivered high energy, sharp play, and a reminder of just how deep this roster runs.

What fans got wasn’t just a preseason tune-up. It was a statement.

Instead of the usual veteran stars carrying the night, two unexpected names stole the show. Freshman right side Kalyssa Blackshear and junior outside hitter Alanna Bankston each pounded down 14 kills, leading all attackers in a breakout display of firepower. The performance underscored Louisville’s trademark depth, showing that on any given night, the Cardinals have multiple weapons ready to step up.

While many expected familiar names like middle blocker Cara Cresse or junior outside Chloe Chicoine to top the stat sheet, it was Blackshear and Bankston who had the crowd buzzing.

Defensively, each side had its anchor. Junior libero Molly Urban steadied the back row for Team Black, while junior libero Kamden Schrand did the same for Team Red. But the biggest surprise came from sophomore outside hitter Payton Petersen, who led all players with 18 digs. Her performance was a testament to Louisville’s grit and versatility.

From emerging contributors to established leaders, the scrimmage offered an early glimpse of the depth, firepower, and competitive edge fueling the 2025 squad. If this night was any indication, Cardinal fans are in for a season as unpredictable as it is electrifying.
