Coaches Speak: Preseason Setter Poll PPV ranks leave a few minor surprises

Coaches Speak: Preseason Setter Poll PPV ranks leave a few minor surprises

We are back and heading to our next position group the setters.  Here is how the coaches ended up scoring them (again not every program was voted on) these are the tops from the one's that did

  1. Izzy Starck - Penn State Soph PPV 277  Starck obviously talented and gifted in the art of setting, but in the end I think the difference of "greatness" for coaches came down to her intangibles: Head to Head w/ Reilly and defeating John Cook 2x w/ an inferior team as a Freshman.  Plus her leadership and fire, not afraid to step up and take charge when the team struggled.
  2. Bergen Reilly - Nebraska Junior PPV 276 Reilly was noted how solid she is technique wise, consistent and focused.  Coaches talked about her IQ and vision and how even she is at handling everything at Nebraska.  A few questioned why fans were/are so quick to call for Flynn in the Spring?
  3. Nayellis Cabello - Louisville Soph PPV 263 Nayellis is the Rodney Dangerfield of setters "she can't get any respect".  The problem is she is simply to much of a People's Champion, she is way to middle class for volleyball to promote as a star.  Nay would rather hangout with the $5 ticket people in Row 46 than than the suits in the suites.  Unfortunately for her those are the people that vote for all the awards.  She brings everyone together in the gym and outside of it and everyone feels comfortable around Nay.  She knows she isn't getting picked to be the Olympic Setter she doesnt' have the last name for it so she just worries about winning and her team did a lot of that.  She really is an athlete that any girl can look at and say I could be here some day and could come up and talk to at a camp.  I do this job for free because of athletes lik Nay.
  4. Charlie Fuerbringer - Wisconsin Soph PPV 263 Charlie was the chosen one for Wisconsin and started from Day 1 on last season.  The Badgers #2 preseason struggles out of the gate last year as did Charley and they fell early on.  Eventually Fuerbringer adn the Badgers got rolling and the Badgers still won the conference.  Charley played much better as the season wore on and was named All-American.
  5. Averi Carlson - SMU Graduate PPV 250 Carlson will play for her 3rd Texas school in three years when she heads to SMU.  She opened some eyes when she left Texas in December, this after surprising people and joining them last seaon.  Carlson is experiended and has been a little banged up, but should be good to go for this her final season.  SMU has dynamic pins and watch for some high attack offense and schemes this eason in Ft. Worth
  6. Zayna Meyer - UCLA Graduate PPV 240 Meyer comes in as a grad student and is looking to leave after this season is over.  Another veteran that UCLA is hoping that Meyer will be the missing ingredient to blend effort to make sure all the new pieces blend together to make terrific masterpiece in Austin this weeekend.
