Create a Player ProfileQ&A With Manaia Ogbechie

6 '3 middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie was a late – but crucial recruit in the 2025 class, and will be joining the Huskers at the end of May to begin training. Disciplined, intrinsically motivated, and excels both athletically and academically – she will be a perfect fit for this Nebraska team.
Manaia recently finished a session for the USA training development program, a n organization she has been involved in since U15. I asked her how she feels that experience will prepare her for the collegiate game and perform at the next level; “Training with USA Volleyball has been instrumental in preparing me for the college game,” she says. “The gym environment pushes me to grow in every skill – especially as a middle, I’ve had the chance to dig, set, pass, and serve, which deepens my understanding of the game.” Playing among the top youth talent in the country, the habitat fosters competition and growth. “The speed, physicality, and volleyball IQ of the athletes across the net demand your full focus. That kind of intensity forces you to adapt quickly, compete fearlessly, and elevate.”
Manaia was not the only Husker that attended – the star-studded ‘26 trio in Keoni Williams, Jayden Robinson, and Gabby DiVita also being invited. “One of the best things about NTDP is how it brings top athletes together and builds relationships early on. Even before I committed, I had the chance to connect with a couple of the girls in my class and the classes below – I was actually roommates with Ryan Hunter during one of the training blocks, which was so fun.” Last year, Manaia earned the chance to compete for the NORCECA u19 team, alongside Jayden Robsinson. “We connected right away, and even got to meet each other's families, which made it even more special. Getting to grow these bonds before stepping on campus means everything.”
Being a top athlete not only requires physical ability and athleticism, but mental fortitude and a determination to be great. Manaia is an epitomization of this, “I compete to win – plain and simple,” she says. “That’s why I chose Nebraska. I love high pressure moments, and I thrive when there’s something on the line, but I also love to learn and improve. Being surrounded by a team of driven, elite women who bring that same energy is what fuels me.” Both on and off the court, Manaia embodies the Husker ideals of hard work and resilience, and her presence will be a strong addition to the team culture. When asked what her ultimate goals are for her volleyball career, she voiced a sentiment that I’m sure all of Husker Nation shares; to help bring a National Championship home to Lincoln. “I want to be part of a legacy that makes history.”
