Of the many coaches I was able to chat with at USA Nationals this week one of the more impressive conversations had to be with newly named Head Hawaii Women's Coach Joshua Walker. I knew Coach Walker briefly before, through conversations at Baylor and also talking with him when I was allowed to cover NTDP sessions. You could just sense he was a respected and classy individual.
Our conversation led me to believe nothing other than the fact of Hawaii Women's VB is on the fast-tract back. Walker is my kind of college coach and though he often speaks in a mild tone, when you ask him about "The team of the Hawaiian People" he gets passionate in a hurry and the tone and passion changes immediately. Winning and winning big is important to him, for them. I love coaches that aren't afraid to talk openly about big dreams publicly because they know if they come up short they will be more upset than anyone else could give them a hard-time to make them feel any worse!
Walker talked about "locking the boarders" when it comes to recruiting and keeping all Hawaiian kids home they need so they play in front of family and friends and fans. Josh couldn't talk about the last two weeks of recruiting activity, but you know he has to be very happy about the start.
He talked about all of the pride statewide and with alumni, in the program and it's going to be very easy to get that firing high again. I've been very open about how I feel about Hawaii's first class under Coach W and about him as the next coach. Simply a grand slam. Things will happen sooner rather than later for them. That thought was cemented into fact this week during our talk in Indy.
