Road to a College Home: Sydney Spence

Road to a College Home: Sydney Spence

A 6-2 middle blocker out of Suwanee, Georgia, Spence utlizes her physicality and intelligence to reap the most benefits of her game. She is an active contributor to her club and high school teams; establishing herself as a constant threat by running routes in front of and behind the setter. She is just as much a respectable presence at the net – moves quick laterally and is often able to fully close the block. As the days till June 15th seem to slip away, I asked Sydney about her mindset going into this transitional period, the feelings involved, and what she wants to take away from her collegiate career.

Q: Do you have a “dream school” in mind that you wont hesitate to choose if they call, or are you planning on taking more time in your recruiting process?

A: Honestly, I am undecided on my dream school as it’s still early in the recruiting process.  I am excited about the opportunity to continue my volleyball career at the collegiate level.  I am taking my time to not only decide on an amazing volleyball program, but a positive college environment and culture for learning.  As a scholar athlete, my education and degree path is just as important as the passion of the game! Just being able to express my love for the game, and have the opportunity to play at the collegiate level is a dream come true.

Q: How does it feel to take that next step into a new chapter of your life and make such a big decision? Is it overwhelming, anxious, or exciting?

A: It’s all of the above!  Overwhelming, anxious, and especially exciting! It still hasn’t sunk in just yet that I will be a high school graduate in May 2027 and soon after playing college volleyball.  Right now, I am eager to begin my 2nd year of varsity volleyball and then the next club season.  Hoping to earn our team bid for the USAVolleyball Championships again next year.  This year, I am applying to colleges and universities, standardized testing, and obtaining my driver’s license.  I am going to continue to focus on my volleyball skills development and consistency so that I am more than ready for the college court!

Q:  What is your biggest personal goal for your college career, and what kind of environment do you see yourself thriving in?

A: My biggest personal goal is to obtain my college degree, graduating with honors.  I also want to contribute to my college volleyball team by leading the team to the highest level. I thrive in environments that are focused on team synergy while supporting individual development, are fair but competitive, and nurturing yet tough. But I also want to have fun, and enjoy the college life!  Attending college is the ultimate experience, and I want to ensure that I make the most of it.   Excelling in volleyball and academically!
