Michigan State making noise in the Big Ten

Michigan State making noise in the Big Ten

While we spent last week discussing potential teams that could knock off the Nebraska Cornhuskers, such as the Wisconsin Badgers and Indiana Hoosiers, we might need to add another team to that list: the Michigan State Spartans.

The Spartans made a statement over the weekend by not only defeating the then-unbeaten Indiana Hoosiers but also sweeping them, leaving them with a conference record of 4-2 and a 14-2 overall record.

The Hooisers had come into this match undefeated in conference play. Now, the Spartans can make a national statement by knocking off No. 1 Nebraska Friday night, and that will be a tall task for such a young team.

The Huskers haven’t lost a match this season nor a set. So it will, of course, be a tough task, but not impossible. They have proven that with their sweep of Indiana.

Keep in mind, this is a program that only won six conference games last year, and they already have four conference wins and 14 wins overall after only winning 13 last year, so they have exceeded expectations.

It’s going to take a monumental effort from third-year head coach Kristen Kelsay’s team and players like junior outside hitter Bianca Mumcular, senior opposite Evie Doezema, Zuzanna Kulig, and Karolina Staniszewska to pull off this upset.

But the Cornhuskers better learn from the Hoosiers not to underestimate this team, or they might find themselves in the ranks of the undefeated no more.
