OK here is the best advice recruiting ANY of YOU recruits and it’s worth the entire year subscription you are paying and then some. If you want to TRULY LEARN about the schools that are going to be recruiting you or you might have on your list. STUDY THEM THIS FALL. Like your parents tell you, get in your room with no distractions and ACTUALLY STUDY THEM.

I’m going to tell you exactly what to watch for in this article (I’m not going to say whether it’s good or bad every athlete is different in what they want in a program) VBAdrenaline will simply point out some things that recruits should look for if you want to learn about programs.

1. WHY NOW: “Well what do you mean study now I just talked to that staff they are so nice and then they coached me at NTDP” EXACTLY. Those are controlled/relaxed “Disneyland Environments. Starting the last week of August this is REAL. Go watch how they are different. Just watch coaches in general. What is different about August than NTDP or Summer Camp or when they came to your clubs College Coach Camp?

***Take notes on each one. Take yourself out of “fandom” and sit with a parent and discuss.  Again this is not meant to be negative, be real, take real notes what do you see because all coaches will be different.  Also, they might be different match to match!!!

2.  How does a HC truly act: I always say “if you want to know what college sports is truly like, be a fly on the wall of a film session when a coach loses three in a row and two vs. rivals” then you find out what they are true like; No ESPN or B1G network cameras around and just closed door film session with the players, much different normally than Summer Camp.

Watch coaches of schools you want to possibly attend during matches. That’s on you and there is no outside forces to influence you, just jot notes on feelings and what you see and feel watching them. Again talk with your parents about what you saw and how that compares to what you have heard about them or saw from them other places. Do you like it? Not like it? Understand it? How would you like playing for that? Etc. because they don’t change just for you.

3.  CULTURE: The BIG WORD well learn about it for yourself and again this isn’t to call anyone out, but HS athletes probably can read REAL Genuine Enthusiasm (as I call it) and Fake Enthusiasm (as I call it) better than us adults or coaches can. Watch the benches, watch the “celebrations” are the other team members bought in or half-way clapping because “they were told they have to”. How do athletes take “being coached” and watch body language it doesn’t lie. Now of course there are little frustrating competitive MOMENTS people have once, but that is why you take notes and look back on teams and players and what happens certain places.

Then when it comes time you have to “ASK TOUGH ?s” about these things. Trust me certain programs have these things happen much more often than others do. Also, what kind of player are you and what environment do you need to be in?

4.  Look at lineups and rosters: We are in the process of making this part of each school’s profile on our college site on VBAdrenaline because it truly is important in today’s recruiting world. What schools value their recruits more than others.

Now I’m simply going off of programs I’ve gotten to know closer than others:

But, like them or dislike them Texas truly puts a value on sticking with their recruits if at all possible. Now when they hit the portal are they getting the top transfer YES they have $ and David and Ben are dang good recruiters, but they are not going after foreigners and they are not abandoning their own athletes much. I think the new regime at UCLA is going more to that philosophy now as well. Do research without reading chat boards and looking into logos and see what is truly going on inside programs and what fits what you want the best.

So as you watch schools get their roster and break it down, how many girls playing are: True recruits, Foreign Players brought in, and Transfers brought in?

So there is a lot of great action to watch starting in Milwaukee in late August and ending in San Antonio just before Christmas.
