Durango Fall Classic Recap: Mater Dei climbs back to the top

The Final

No. 2 Mater Dei closed out the tournament by taking down top-ranked Sierra Canyon in straight

sets, 25-18, 25-17, to win the championship. It was Sierra Canyon's second straight trip to the

Durango final without a title to show for it. The Trailblazers reached last year's championship

match as well and still haven't broken through in Las Vegas.

The Road to the Title

The Monarchs got past Harvard-Westlake in the quarterfinals, 25-21, 25-19, then had to work

harder in the semifinals against No. 9 Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio, Texas), needing all

three sets to escape with a win. By the time Mater Dei reached the final, it had already survived

the toughest bracket the event had seen in years. Roughly six of the MaxPreps Top 10 teams

made it as far as the quarterfinals this year.

A Record-Tying Sixth Title

Saturday's championship gave Mater Dei its sixth all-time Durango Fall Classic title, pulling the

program even with Kentucky powerhouse Assumption, for the most in tournament history. It's

also Mater Dei's third Durango title in the last four years, following championships in 2023 and

2024 and a third-place finish a year ago.

Who Stood Out

Senior outside hitter Westley Matavao was named tournament MVP, capping an all-around

weekend in which she anchored Mater Dei's offense through three straight matches. She was

joined on the all-tournament team by setter Kalea Lee, middle blocker Emma Kingston and

libero Sienna Cicero, giving Mater Dei four of the tournament's top individual honors.

Beyond the champions, the tournament reinforced just how deep this year's field was. With 64

teams and 13 nationally ranked programs in the bracket, simply advancing out of pool play and

into the championship rounds was an accomplishment on its own.

Looking Ahead

Saturday's final was likely the first of several meetings between these two programs this season.

Mater Dei and Sierra Canyon are both Southern Section powers, and with Durango behind them,

both teams now turn toward the section and CIF Southern California playoffs later this fall where

this same matchup could very well be revisited with a state title on the line.
