The University of Louisville women’s volleyball team opened the 2025 season at the Cardinal Classic, taking on Auburn, Morehead State, and St. John’s. While the Cardinals gained valuable early-season reps, the weekend also highlighted areas of growth as they prepare for a demanding stretch ahead.
In the opener against Auburn, Louisville struggled to establish offensive rhythm, hitting under .200 and finding it difficult to generate consistent scoring. The Cards also lacked a back-row attack throughout the weekend, raising questions about how much offense they’ll be able to create from behind the 10-foot line and through the middle of the court.
The competition level after Auburn made it tougher to fully measure Louisville’s ceiling, but bigger tests are coming quickly. Matchups with Illinois, Texas, and Creighton will provide a clearer sense of where this group stacks up against elite opponents.
For Louisville to compete at the highest level, offensive production from the pins will be a major focus. Junior outside hitter Chloe Chicoine and sophomore outside hitter Payton Petersen both faced challenges finding efficiency against Auburn’s physical defense. Their ability to finish consistently will be a crucial factor in whether the Cards can position themselves for another deep postseason run.
Even with some early bumps, Louisville showed flashes of what they’re capable of. The Cardinal Classic was only the first step of a long season, and the upcoming slate offers the perfect opportunity to sharpen their game against top-tier opponents.
