Nebraska’s Cook announces retirement; Big Red welcomes a new, but familiar, face
In shocking news that came within minutes of one another late Wednesday afternoon, legendary Nebraska Head Coach John Cook announced his retirement with Dani Busboom-Kelly, a 2006 National Champion libero with the Cornhuskers, stepping into the role.
Through his tenure at the helm, Cook led the program to five Big Ten titles, nine Big 12 titles, 12 Final Fours, and four National Championships. Cook leaves Lincoln holding an 883-176 overall record along with a 722-103 (.875) standing solely with Nebraska, which stands as the highest winning percentage for any D1 program over the 25-year period he headed “Big Red”. The Cornhuskers did not have to wait long to find their next leader.
Assistant coach and well-decorated player Jordan Larson also, notably, stepped down earlier in the week.
Dani Busboom-Kelly leaves behind a much shorter, but equally as impressive, stint at Louisville. DBK led the Cards to a 203-44 record while appearing in two National Championships, capped off by her squad’s appearance in December against Penn State. After truly elevating the Louisville Volleyball program, Busboom-Kelly is now expected to guide Nebraska back to the mountaintop, a place they have already reached on five occasions. Louisville is promoting assistant Dan Meske, who has been with the team since 2017.
These moves surely shake up not only the Big Ten and ACC, but the national volleyball landscape and are sure to provide great intrigue and anticipation heading into the 2025 season.
