Louisville Locks In Starters Ahead of Season Opener vs. Auburn

The University of Louisville women’s volleyball team has finalized its lineup for Friday night’s 2025 season opener against Auburn, and several hotly contested position battles have now been settled. Head coach Dan Meske and his staff evaluated performances from the spring, preseason practices, and last weekend’s alumni match before naming the starters who will take the floor at 6 p.m. in the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
Right Side Attacker: Blackshear Earns the Nod
Freshman Kalyssa Blackshear has won the right-side hitter spot, edging out junior Reese Robins. Blackshear got the starting nod in last Saturday’s alumni match and delivered, hammering down seven kills on a .462 clip. Her ability to provide both size and offensive consistency at the pin ultimately gave her the edge heading into the opener.
Middle Blocker: Sherman Secures the Spot
At middle blocker, redshirt junior Hannah Sherman held off freshman Addison Makun. Sherman’s steady blocking presence and veteran instincts were on full display in the alumni match, where she led the team in blocks. While Makun continues to impress with her athleticism and long-term upside, the staff is leaning on Sherman’s experience to open the season.
Defensive Specialist: Kenny Breaks Through
Freshman Hannah Kenny has carved out a role in the backcourt, winning the defensive specialist position over junior Molly Urban. Kenny’s strong serve-receive game, coupled with her aggressive serving and ability to transition plays into offense, separated her in the final weeks of camp. She will step into the rotation as one of the Cards’ key first-year contributors.
Looking Ahead
With these battles decided, Louisville’s lineup combines a balance of veteran leadership and fresh talent. Blackshear and Kenny join proven returners like setter Nayelis Cabello, libero Kamden Schrand, and middle blocker Cara Cresse, giving the Cardinals a mix of size, skill, and depth across the board.
When the Cards take the court against Auburn, fans will get their first official look at how this new group comes together, and early signs point to a lineup with the firepower and flexibility to contend deep into the season.
