Despite sweep, the Cornhuskers still have a few things to work on
Although the Nebraska Cornhuskers had little to no issues defeating the Maryland Terrapins, there were a few glitches here and there in the early part of the match.
The Cornhuskers led 19-12 in the first set, but then the serve receive broke down, which allowed Maryland to rally and tie the score at 22-all on an ace. The Huskers went on to win the set, but the Terps recorded nine aces, a season-high for a Husker opponent.
Coach Dani Busboom Kelly explained why the Huskers briefly had a breakdown.
“Our passing broke down a little bit, and I thought we just got complacent,” she said. “It wasn’t the intent to go 6-2, but the opportunity presented itself, and then we wanted to stick with it and see if they could finish that second set off even though it was tight.”
The adjustments the Cornhuskers made worked because Maryland had their second-highest hitting percentage of the season at .090 percent.
Allie Jackson said the team emphasizes their defense.
“On top of having a good clean serve, you also want to play good defense, because we say it all the time in the gym, your moment is going to come, and you want to be ready for it, regardless of what that is, whether it’s a dig, a kill, a block,” she said. “So switching your mindset from offense to defense, and then knowing that you have one shot to capitalize on that.”
The Cornhuskers will go on the road to face No. 13 Penn State Friday night.
