Children of the Corn: Potential 2027 Prospects

Children of the Corn: Potential 2027 Prospects

As June 15th nears, all of the top colleges are working to finalize their recruiting gameplan. Nebraska, who always manages to draw a top class, is searching for their next generation of stars. Nebraska will be  graduating its revelation of a class in Bergen Reilly, Harper Murray, Andi Jackson, and Laney Choboy, so it’s needled to say that they’re looking to load up with the most talent possible this upcoming year. However, with the NCAA upping the scholarship limit, there is a lot more flexibility and opportunities to cultivate a deeper class, so don’t be surprised if they manage to secure 5 or 6 players. We saw that being implemented in the 2025 class, who added on two late recruits that added critical depth in the middle. Here are the 2027 recruits –by position – I believe Nebraska will likely target.

Shaye Witherspoon (OH): Witherspoon ranks second in the entire class with a PPV of 293, and for good reason. The 6-3 outside (who can also hit opposite), is lethal in the front row, puts up a really strong block, and hits a really heavy ball. Her dynamic style fits in perfectly with that of the modern Nebraska outside, and makes for some really great competition in the practice room. She has become a usual at dream team camp, and she practically looks like part of the team in all the Tiktok she made with current Huskers and recruits.  Shaye has “Nebraska Girl” written all over her, and the potential and ceiling to be the next generation's star.

Kendall Omoruyi (MB): A 6-4 middle and third in the class with a PPV of 291, Kendall is highly desired by several top programs – Nebraska included. The UA Next MVP plays club with the prestigious organization, AZ Storm, as well as having experience playing for USA. Omoruyi uses every bit of her 6 '4 frame to her advantage; quick in transition, able to get on the ball at its peak, and thus – bounce balls well within the 10 foot line. Her blocking is just as impressive – her head above the net as her long arms suffocate opponents. In the wake of the massive loss of Andi Jackson, Omoruyi could carry on her freakishly athletic abilities and point scoring abilities.

Pulelehua Laikona (L/DS): If Nebraska choses a libero to headline this class, I think Laikona is the most likely option and best fit. I’m a big fan of Pulelehua’s game, and I think she would carry on the Nebraska defense’s legacy well. She reads the ball quickly, has stable ball control, and is stopped on steady on almost every serve receive pass. She holds it down the left-back; able to soak up big swings, but also scoop up crafty tips. She also seems to have cultivated a relationship with Assistant Coach (and fellow Hawaiian) Jaylen over their time playing together for NTDP, featuring him in a Tiktok.

Sophee Peterson (S): With a PPV of 282 and a vast resume of awards, Peterson has earned the spot as top setter in the class. The Texas 6A State Champion, Maxpreps Sophomore National POY, and First-Team All-American would certainly be Nebraska’s pick if they chose to go after a setter this cycle, which they likely will based on the rotating pattern they follow. Sophie may not be the tallest setter, but she can deliver the ball so effortlessly to her teammates' ideal location. Her deceptive style is reminiscent of Bergen Reilly’s, often fooling the blockers and getting one-on-one.
